Family
Partnership

As your school becomes more welcoming and collaborative with families, students reap the benefits. Family partnership is key because families are fundamental to children’s healthy development and academic success. Building on nationally recognized best practices, HSC has developed a Family Partnership Model that includes critical leadership development, caregiving, engagement and education, family resource centers, workforce advancement, and policy.

Family Resource Centers are especially effective because they can bring together resources from many organizations and provide supports in a coordinated fashion. When placed in schools, they can increase the positive relationship between the school and families. In 2013, we helped start FRCs in Oakland, Hayward, and San Leandro Unified School Districts through a Connecting Kids to Coverage Initiative to develop no-wrong-door, one-stop opportunities for families to enroll in health coverage and other public benefits. Today, these sites provide a range of support services such as food distribution, clothing drives, legal and tax services in a safe, culturally responsive school district location.

How it works

While we know that every school and community is unique, we believe our Family Partnership Model can both inform and continue to build on similar efforts in schools and communities nationwide. Our model calls for: 1) Leadership Development; 2) Caregiving; 3) Family Engagement and Education; 4) Family Support Hubs; 5) Family Workforce Advancement; and 6) Cross-Sector Collaboration and Policy.
