ALAMEDA COUNTY HEALTH CARE
REACH Ashland Youth Center
We envision a vibrant community in which all youth thrive.
When youth thrive, so does our future.
In 2004 a small group of youth from the Ashland unincorporated area of Alameda County participated in a powerful community meeting aimed at addressing one critical question: “How can we make life better for teens in our community?” In a community where 20% of youth live in poverty, this question was critical. Since that time, young people have worked with county and community partners to create the REACH Ashland Youth Center and the Ashland Youth Complex.
Today, REACH has over 3,500 youth members, ages 11–24, and over 80 staff. REACH is part of the Center for Healthy Schools and Communities and Alameda County Health Care Services Agency. We collaborate with a range of public agencies, local school districts, and community-based providers to deliver services.
REACH is here because a group of young people wanted to make their neighborhood a better, safer place. Because we've seen the power of young people to effect change, we believe that, when provided resources and support, young people are in the best position to determine their own struggles, needs, and direction. Our approach to serving youth includes three components that we integrate throughout our programming:
Healing – Working on the immediate needs of youth and paying special attention to those needs resulting from critically acute or traumatic events and conditions.
Capacity – Developing and cultivating life-long learning capacities, social skills, and competencies to allow youth not just to survive circumstances, but to flourish, connect, love, lead, and create.
Action – Providing support to lead, learn, and grow, and to be positive change agents in the world.
Our mission is to honor youth power and build our community’s resilience. We are committed to creating a culture of safety, belonging, and possibility that cultivates equity and happiness – in our families, community, and beyond.
